In order to capture the sound of this bass line I would recommend playing a P-Bass with flat wound strings (old ones if you have a set). If you play with round wounds I would play the line using a palm muting technique (see last part of video for explanation) and your tone control turned all the way down. That will allow you to get a dark percussive sound like the one on the recording. [Read more…]

There are lots of great bass lines that have been played over the years on different recordings that are memorable for many different reasons. The Payback bass line played by Fred Thomas is definitely one of the greats.
